Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has been at the center of a significant political move, formally tabling an impeachment motion against Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The motion, presented in early October 2024, accused Gachagua of multiple serious offenses, including gross misconduct, violation of the Constitution, and economic crimes.
Mutuse laid out an extensive case, detailing 11 grounds for impeachment. Among the allegations were claims that Gachagua had violated his oath of office by dividing Kenyans along ethnic lines and undermining the presidency.
Mutuse also accused him of corruption, specifically involving the acquisition of Ksh 5.2 billion in properties through questionable means, as well as misconduct in dealings with the Nairobi County government.
The motion gained significant momentum, with over 290 MPs backing it, far exceeding the required threshold for it to proceed in Parliament.
One of the most serious charges leveled by Mutuse was Gachagua’s alleged involvement in money laundering through his family members, specifically his sons, who were accused of benefiting from large, suspicious loans and conducting business illegally with the government.
As the motion moves forward, the political landscape in Kenya is watching closely, with many wondering how this could impact Gachagua’s future in office and the broader dynamics within the ruling party.
