Moi University is currently embroiled in a significant land dispute, involving over 1,500 acres of land in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.
The land, claimed by both Moi University and squatters from the Ngeria Estate, has become a flashpoint for controversy.
Allegations have emerged linking Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi to the illegal acquisition of part of this land, prompting his summons by the National Assembly’s Committee on Lands.
During a fact-finding mission, the committee instructed the university to halt any farming activities on the disputed land until the issue is resolved.
The squatters have accused unknown individuals of trespassing on the land and beginning farming preparations, even while the dispute over ownership persists.
The squatters assert that they have a rightful claim to the land, which led them to seek intervention from Parliament earlier this year.
Both Moi University and the squatters have presented documents to support their claims, and the Committee has pledged to thoroughly investigate the matter before tabling a final report.
This dispute has drawn attention to broader land-related conflicts in Kenya, particularly involving influential figures.
The allegations against Oscar Sudi underscore concerns about land grabbing by political elites. Despite Sudi’s involvement, the committee has emphasized the importance of accountability and has warned against any defiance of their orders to suspend all activities on the land until the investigation concludes.
