Raila Odinga has recently shifted focus toward continental politics as he campaigns for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
In a closed-door meeting with top ODM officials, Raila reassured his party that his bid for the AUC position, with support from President William Ruto, would not negatively impact the party.
He emphasized that, even if he were to win, he would remain available for consultations. Raila also announced that Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o would serve as the acting party leader while he focuses on his campaign.
This development has sparked concerns within ODM, as party members fear a potential leadership vacuum.
Raila addressed these fears by expressing confidence in the new leadership team he recently appointed, including Nyong’o, and reiterated that the party remains strong and capable in his absence. The election for the AUC chair will be held in February 2025.
Raila’s strategic focus on the African Union signals a shift in his political career, raising questions about his role in Kenya’s 2027 general elections.
While he has not explicitly ruled out running for president again, he has indicated that his current focus is on serving the continent.
His potential departure from local politics has left some ODM supporters apprehensive about the party’s future without his direct leadership.
