Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made alarming claims about two assassination attempts involving food poisoning.
He stated that during a visit to Kisumu on August 30, 2024, undercover agents allegedly bugged his hotel room and tried to poison his food.
He claimed the plot was detected, allowing him to avoid the attempt on his life.
A second incident allegedly occurred in Nyeri on September 3, during a meeting with the Kikuyu Council of Elders, where another attempt was made to poison his food.
These accusations come amid a turbulent political climate, with Gachagua facing impeachment and a strained relationship with President William Ruto.
Gachagua has been vocal about his deteriorating relationship with Ruto, hinting that these assassination attempts might be politically motivated, reflecting deeper tensions within the government.
He compared his ordeal to past assassination plots against other high-ranking officials in Kenya’s political history, including the late George Saitoti.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken Gachagua’s claims seriously and summoned him for questioning, emphasizing the gravity of the allegations.
These developments have further complicated Gachagua’s political situation, adding to the ongoing legal battles concerning his impeachment.
