Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has voiced strong criticism toward the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding the recent detention of social media influencer Maverick Aoko.
Owino demanded that Aoko be released, accusing the DCI of “abductions” and warning that, should the issue not be addressed promptly, he and others would resort to occupying DCI offices.
This statement reflects a growing wave of support for Aoko, with many Kenyans and online followers using #FreeAoko to call for transparency in her case.
Owino’s response highlights public frustration with what some see as an unjust arrest over allegedly controversial social media posts critical of influential figures.
Maverick Aoko’s arrest took place following complaints about posts made on her social media account, which have since been removed under unclear circumstances.
Reports indicate that Aoko was detained after her home was searched and electronic devices confiscated.
Her lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, noted that Aoko was initially denied both legal representation and medication, worsening her health condition.
Eventually, she was transferred to Muthaiga Police Station, where Ombeta described the charges against her as “frivolous and vexatious”.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about freedom of expression and the boundaries of public criticism of government officials.
Aoko, known for her outspoken posts, previously shared criticisms of high-profile individuals, which some suggest led to her arrest.
This situation has drawn attention to the role of law enforcement in addressing online dissent and is likely to spark further dialogue regarding the protection of individual rights in Kenya’s digital space.
