Kenyan MP Peter Salasya recently delivered a fiery speech criticizing his fellow legislators over their handling of the controversial Adani deals.
Salasya expressed frustration at how MPs seemingly applaud any stance taken by President William Ruto regarding these deals, labeling such behavior as unprincipled and sycophantic.
They came in light of President Ruto’s decision to cancel major contracts involving the Adani Group, citing corruption allegations and the need for transparency.
The deals included a Sh96.68 billion project with KETRACO and a proposed 30-year lease of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which were met with widespread scrutiny and backlash from various stakeholders.
The Adani Group, a major Indian conglomerate, has been embroiled in allegations of fraud and corruption globally, including charges in the United States.
Despite previous government defenses of the group’s credibility, President Ruto’s directive to cancel the agreements reflected new evidence of malpractice.
This decision came shortly after high-ranking officials, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, defended the deals, arguing that due diligence had been conducted.
However, critics like Salasya and Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba emphasized the embarrassment these deals brought to Kenya, demanding accountability from those who facilitated them.
The episode has reignited debates on Kenya’s governance, public-private partnerships, and foreign investments.
While some leaders, including Raila Odinga, have advocated for transparency to attract foreign investors, others argue that mishandled deals tarnish the country’s reputation.
Salasya’s impassioned critique highlights growing frustrations among Kenyans over perceived lapses in leadership, with calls for stricter oversight and adherence to principles of accountability.
