Several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) sustained injuries following a physical altercation that disrupted proceedings in the Nakuru County Assembly.
The scuffle, which broke out over leadership changes, forced Assembly Speaker Joel Karuri to suspend the session.
The incident reportedly began after Speaker Karuri formally announced the appointment of Keringet Ward MCA William Mutai as the new Majority Leader, replacing Mosop Ward MCA Alex Lagat, who had held the position for two years.
The announcement sparked intense opposition from some MCAs, leading to heated verbal exchanges that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.
Among those injured during the chaos was Kiamaina MCA Paul Warigi, who revealed that an egg was thrown at him, striking his neck.
Viral videos from the assembly captured the intense verbal altercations and the subsequent physical fight, with some MCAs opting to walk out to avoid the fracas.
Speaker Karuri temporarily halted the mid-morning session as the assembly descended into disorder.
Some MCAs blamed the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leadership for failing to address the ongoing political tensions within the assembly.
“When the speaker made the announcement, an egg was hurled at me, hitting my neck. Such actions are unbecoming of reputable leaders,” lamented MCA Warigi.
The leadership change followed Majority Chief Whip Fadhili Msuri’s recent acknowledgment of Mutai’s election by party members.
This development has further exposed divisions within the assembly over party leadership decisions.
