Government Unveils 2025 School Opening Dates Amid Festive Season Excitement

On Thursday, November 28, the Ministry of Education released the much-awaited academic calendar for 2025, outlining key term dates and national examination schedules for all schools.

The timetable provides a clear framework to guide schools, students, and parents as they prepare for the upcoming academic year.

First Term to Begin on January 6

According to a statement issued by Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang, all schools across the country are set to reopen for the first term on January 6, 2025.

The term will last for 13 weeks, culminating in its closure on April 4, 2025. During this term, students will also enjoy a half-term break lasting five days, from February 26 to March 2.

The first term holiday is scheduled to begin on April 7, giving students and teachers a well-deserved three-week break before the commencement of the second term on April 28, 2025.

Second Term: A Longer Study Period

The second term will extend for 14 weeks, running from April 28 to August 1, 2025. This term is expected to be intense, as students gear up for both routine studies and preparation for the end-of-year examinations.

Following the second term holiday, schools will resume for the final term on August 25, 2025.

Third Term and Examination Dates

The third term will be relatively short, spanning only nine weeks, and will come to a close on October 24, 2025, marking the beginning of the long November and December holiday season.

The term is critical as it coincides with the administration of national examinations for learners across various levels of education.

The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) for 2025 will commence on October 27 and run for four days, concluding on October 30, 2025.

Similarly, students sitting for the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will begin their tests on October 27, but their exams will take five days, ending on October 31, 2025.

For secondary school candidates, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will take place over a three-week period, starting on November 3 and concluding on November 21, 2025.

A Structured Year Ahead

This detailed timetable from the Ministry of Education ensures that all stakeholders are well-prepared for the academic year ahead.

The calendar emphasizes a balanced schedule of study, breaks, and exams, catering to the diverse needs of students, parents, and educators.

As the festive season begins, families are encouraged to use this time to plan effectively and ensure their children are ready for the new school year.

The government’s proactive release of the academic calendar is a significant step toward fostering a smooth transition into 2025.
