Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged the existence of a clandestine unit responsible for recent abductions in Kenya.
He claims this unit operates independently of the Inspector General of Police, from the 21st floor of a building in Nairobi’s city center, under the leadership of an individual identified only as ‘Abel,’ who is reportedly related to a senior government official.
Gachagua criticized President William Ruto for his silence on these abductions, suggesting that the victims are predominantly individuals who have expressed criticism of the current administration.
He warned that if the unit is not dismantled, he would disclose the building’s name and the full identities of those involved.
The former Deputy President emphasized that silencing dissent through abductions is not a solution to public discontent.
He urged the government to address the underlying causes of dissatisfaction among citizens, questioning why there is widespread disapproval of the administration within just two years of its tenure.
These allegations come amid a series of abductions, including that of cartoonist Gideon Kibet, also known as Kibet Bull, and five others in December, bringing the total number of reported abductions since June to 82.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have denied any involvement in these incidents, urging the public to disregard unverified information aimed at tarnishing the police force’s reputation.
