Ms. Veronica Muli, the principal of St. Anne’s Girls’ Secondary School in Makadara, Nairobi, faced significant backlash after locking out students who arrived late or had not fully paid their school fees.
Some of these students had traveled from distant counties, including Kisii, Mombasa, and Garissa, and were left stranded outside the school gate late into the night.
A video shared by the Makadara Social Justice and Information Centre highlighted the situation, showing students sitting at the school gate during nighttime.
The incident drew swift reactions from the community and local authorities.
Makadara Constituency’s Member of Parliament, Hon. George Aladwa, dispatched his team to the school, instructing the administration to allow the stranded students inside.
Under pressure, the school guards, who were reportedly acting on the principal’s orders, eventually permitted the students to enter.
Following the public outcry, officials from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Ministry of Education visited the school to investigate the matter.
After interrogating Ms. Muli, the TSC interdicted her, indicating that she would face disciplinary action for her conduct.
This incident underscores the challenges faced by students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and highlights the importance of compassionate leadership in educational institutions.
