Former Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT), Margaret Ndung’u, has turned down an ambassadorial appointment offered by President William Ruto.
In a letter addressed to the Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Relations on Thursday, January 9, Margaret formally rejected her nomination as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana, citing personal reasons for her decision.
Her nomination came after she was removed from her ICT Cabinet Secretary position on December 19, 2024, just three months into her role. She was replaced by former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo in a cabinet reshuffle.
Following her removal from office, President Ruto offered her the diplomatic role as part of a reshuffle that saw several former government officials being nominated for ambassadorial positions.
Margaret has now become the second senior leader to reject a diplomatic appointment under President Ruto’s administration, following former Mungirango MP Vincent Mogaka, who also turned down his nomination for undisclosed reasons.
President Ruto had nominated several other prominent figures for key diplomatic roles. Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba was nominated as Kenya’s permanent representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Dorothy Angote was selected as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, while Andrew Karaja received the nomination as Kenya’s ambassador to Brazil.
Margaret’s decision to reject the role has sparked discussions, especially given her recent removal from the cabinet after a brief tenure.
