Senior Government Official Resigns, Cites Frustration with Unresolved Issues
In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Peter Mbae, the Head of Government Delivery Services, has resigned from his position, citing ongoing issues that remain unresolved despite his repeated efforts to address them.
Dr. Mbae’s resignation letter, dated January 9, was directed to Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.
Dr. Mbae, who had held the role for less than a year, explained that his dedication and hard work could not overcome the persistent challenges within his office.
He expressed his frustration that issues he had raised to Mr. Koskei were still unaddressed.
The resignation letter stated, “Despite my passion, focus, and consistency, for reasons and issues that I have consistently brought to your attention and have not been resolved to date, it has not been possible to carry out my duties as intended.
My position as Head of Government Delivery Services is no longer tenable.”
Dr. Mbae added, “In order to be accountable to the people of Kenya, owing to the fact that the appointment was widely circulated, I therefore request to formally disengage from this appointment so as to pursue other interests.”
In an interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Dr. Mbae confirmed his resignation, stating that he would now turn his attention to other opportunities.
“I was a professional in my own right before joining the government, so I will return to what I was doing before,” he explained.
Dr. Mbae has had an extensive career in public service. Prior to his appointment as Head of Government Delivery Services, he worked in several key government positions, including as the Head of Ministerial Programmes in the Ministry of Public Service, Performance and Delivery Management.
He also held the role of Secretary for Investments Promotion at the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry (MITI) starting in January 2023.
Additionally, he served as the Head of the Ministerial Delivery Unit. Throughout his career, Mbae emphasized his strong work ethic and commitment to serving the people of Kenya.
“In all these positions, I served diligently with utmost commitment and sacrifice, driven solely by the genuine desire to achieve sustainable transformation in the lives of citizens in line with the Kenya Kwanza Government manifesto,” he said.
The Government Delivery Services (GDS) is a vital government function that falls under the State Department for Performance and Delivery Management.
The GDS is responsible for coordinating national government programs, monitoring their progress, and ensuring they meet key development goals.
Other functions include reporting on the status of government projects, identifying obstacles in key initiatives, and suggesting solutions to overcome challenges.
Mbae’s resignation comes amid growing speculation about unrest within the government. Recently, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi voiced his dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the rising number of abductions, a concern that deeply affected him personally, as his son was recently abducted but later released.
Mbae’s departure marks a significant moment of reflection for the government as it navigates its internal challenges, and it raises further questions about the working conditions within key government offices.
