Chaos erupted in Kingongo slums, Eldoret, when police officers on a mission to arrest a suspected chang’aa brewer were met with fierce resistance.
The officers were stoned and chased away by a group of about 40 youths armed with stones and crude weapons along the Sosiani River bank.
The confrontation left two police officers with soft tissue injuries on their lower legs.
They were taken to Huruma Sub-County Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged in fair condition.
Despite the attack, the police managed to seize 60 litres of chang’aa, destroy approximately 500 litres of kangara, and confiscate brewing equipment from the site.
Authorities reported that the main brewer, who allegedly incited the mob to attack the officers, managed to escape and is currently being pursued.
This incident occurred just a day after a similar confrontation in the Kiamanyeki area of Mwea East, where DCI detectives narrowly escaped being lynched while attempting to arrest a rape suspect.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a suspect linked to a violent robbery and rape case was arrested earlier at Kiamanyeki.
The operation was carried out by detectives from Kirinyaga Central under the orders of the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer.
The suspect had been mentioned in an ongoing criminal case, identified as Criminal Case No. 278/33/2024 and Court File No. E381.
Detectives tracked the suspect to the village and acted swiftly to make the arrest despite the tense situation.
