Moi University, once a prestigious institution in Kenya, has recently been embroiled in several controversies that have tarnished its reputation.
A significant issue arose when the university allocated Ksh.29.8 million for the construction of a new main gate.
Initially, a budget of Ksh.4.8 million was set, but the project was abandoned due to the gate being on a road reserve.
Subsequently, a new tender for Ksh.25 million was awarded, raising concerns among stakeholders about the substantial expenditure on a single gate, especially given the university’s financial constraints.
Further scrutiny revealed that Moi University officials were under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of embezzling Ksh.2.2 billion through fraudulent infrastructure projects.
The EACC summoned key university officials, including Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey, to answer questions regarding procurement irregularities and financial mismanagement.
The investigation highlighted systemic issues within the university’s administration, prompting calls for greater accountability and transparency in its operations.
Additionally, the university faced allegations of fraud involving the diversion of Ksh.7.7 million in student fees to a private staff welfare account.
The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the incident as a case of fraud, stating that appropriate disciplinary action was taken against the involved employees.
However, the lack of legal proceedings against the culprits raised questions about the effectiveness of the university’s internal controls and its commitment to upholding financial integrity.
These incidents have cast a shadow over Moi University’s commitment to quality education and financial stewardship.
The revelations have sparked public outcry and intensified calls for reforms to restore the institution’s credibility and ensure that such mismanagement does not recur in the future.
