A devastating fire broke out at the University of Nairobi’s main campus, causing significant damage to a prominent section of the campus.
The fire, which started in the Mahatma Gandhi Wing—an iconic building near the old administration block—spread quickly, leaving destruction in its path.
Initial reports suggest that the blaze began on the second floor of the historic structure before moving to other parts of the building.

Though firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by just past midnight on Thursday, January 16, it reignited at dawn.
Around 5 a.m., university security personnel, still reeling from the earlier incident, noticed another large plume of smoke rising from the building.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far, but the fire resulted in the destruction of a considerable amount of property. Fire experts have begun their investigations to determine the cause of the blaze.

As the investigation continues, the scale of the damage is still being assessed.
Many areas of the building were severely impacted, particularly the third floor, where large amounts of ash were left scattered across the stairway.
The Senior Common Room, one of the most important areas, was completely destroyed, with all its contents turned to ashes.

Additionally, the Arziki Restaurant was affected, with some speculating that the fire may have originated from the kitchen.
This tragic event occurred just as students were preparing for their examinations, adding to the distress of the situation.

The incident also highlights a worrying trend of fires occurring in higher learning institutions, following closely on the heels of a similar blaze at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) just a month earlier.
Photos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke have captured the heartbreaking aftermath of the fire, vividly showing the extent of the destruction and its impact on the university community.
