There was a dramatic incident at Globe Roundabout in Nairobi on Tuesday, January 14, when a police officer was arrested for allegedly attempting to solicit a bribe and assaulting a fellow officer.
According to a police report shared with Kenyans.co.ke, the officer in question is a Deputy Officer Commanding Station (DOCS) at Mavindini Police Station in Makueni County.
The officer reportedly tried to extort a bribe from a motorist.
The incident occurred when the officer, who was dressed in full police uniform, stopped a woman driving a Toyota Axio around 10:00 am.
The officer accused the woman of obstructing traffic, and as the situation unfolded, he entered her car. He then allegedly demanded a bribe of KSh 15,000 to let her go.
While this was happening, some passers-by noticed the suspicious activity and alerted another officer on duty. This officer quickly intercepted the vehicle along Slip Road.
As the situation became more heated, the rogue officer became aggressive, and a scuffle broke out.
The altercation prompted intervention from other officers and members of the public, leading to the arrest of the officer.
A subsequent investigation revealed that the officer had self-deployed to Globe Roundabout to carry out traffic duties, which he was not authorized to do.
This raised concerns about his misconduct, especially since it was not his assigned location.
This incident was not the first time the officer had been involved in such illegal activities. In October 2024, he had been arrested along Bunyala Road under similar circumstances.
Just like the Globe Roundabout incident, he had been directing traffic in full uniform in Nairobi, even though the National Police Service Act prohibits officers from performing traffic duties while on leave, whether at their home station or at another station.
The officer’s actions also violated other regulations by working in the traffic police section outside his designated area.
