In a recent incident on the Narok-Suswa road, a police officer lost his firearm during confrontations with protesters.
The officer, identified as Mr. Fredrick Shiundu Kinaibei, the Sub-County Police Commander for Narok Central, was reportedly abducted by armed individuals outside his residence.
According to his statement, while he was opening the gate to his home, two armed men confronted him and forced him into a Toyota Wish vehicle.
He was later found abandoned near a river, unharmed but without his service pistol, a Jericho loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Following the incident, Mr. Kinaibei was arrested after investigations suggested negligence on his part leading to the loss of the firearm.
He faces charges of negligence resulting in the loss of a firearm and providing false information to public officers.
The authorities have initiated a manhunt for the abductors and are working to recover the stolen weapon.
Narok Police Commander Kizito Mutoro emphasized the importance of the operation, stating, “We are hunting the men who stole the weapon.”
This incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of law enforcement officers in the region. It underscores the challenges faced by police officers, who are often targeted by criminals seeking to disarm them.
The loss of a service firearm not only endangers the officer but also poses a significant risk to public safety if the weapon falls into the wrong hands.
Authorities are urging the public to provide any information that could assist in apprehending the suspects and recovering the firearm.
