Nyandarua Senator John Methu has called on President William Ruto to resign immediately due to the increasing cases of abductions in Kenya, which have raised serious concerns about the government’s handling of security.
His bold demand adds weight to similar calls made by opposition leaders, further increasing pressure on the President.
In a strongly worded statement reported by Kenyans.co.ke, Methu, who is closely allied with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, became the first prominent figure from Ruto’s camp to publicly break ranks and demand his resignation.
“President Ruto has lost the moral authority and integrity required to lead this nation. He has betrayed our Christian values, failed the leadership and integrity test by continuously violating the Constitution, and must therefore step down from office immediately,” Methu declared in his statement.
Methu is a member of President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, which has recently shown signs of internal tensions since Gachagua’s ouster in October last year.
However, Methu’s statement marks the first direct call from a party member for the President to resign.
He argued that President Ruto can no longer guarantee Kenyans that there isn’t a secret force involved in the wave of abductions.
The senator’s demand is partly based on revelations made by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi.
Muturi disclosed that President Ruto personally intervened to secure the release of his son, Leslie Muturi, who was abducted during anti-government protests in 2024.
According to Muturi, he had exhausted all official channels trying to locate his son, including reaching out to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, but none were aware of Leslie’s whereabouts.
Muturi stated that after failing to get answers, he approached President Ruto directly, who then called National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director-General Noordin Haji.
Remarkably, his son was released just an hour after Ruto’s intervention, raising questions about who was behind the abductions.
Senator Methu argued that the fact key security officials, including the CS Interior and the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) Director, were unaware of the abduction points to the existence of a rogue security squad operating outside the law and under the President’s command.
President Ruto, who had previously denied the occurrence of abductions, eventually admitted to the issue late last year.
He pledged to end the practice, stating, “We will stop the abductions so that our youth can live peacefully.”
During his New Year’s Eve speech on December 31, Ruto acknowledged cases of excessive force and extrajudicial actions by security officers, further fueling public calls for accountability.
Despite his admission, no arrests have been made concerning the ongoing abductions, and a court case aimed at uncovering those responsible is still in progress.
