On January 18, 2025, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga and his supporters disrupted an interdenominational prayer meeting at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri County.
The event, convened by Pastor Dorcas Rigathi—spouse of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—was abruptly interrupted when Njenga’s convoy arrived, causing panic among attendees. Pastor Dorcas was swiftly escorted from the venue amid the ensuing confusion.
The sudden appearance of Njenga and his entourage led to heightened tensions, with Nairobi-based preacher Rev. Maina ‘wa OTC’ cutting short his prayer as congregants scattered in fear.
Despite the disruption, Njenga was eventually ushered onto the main dais, where he joined the visibly shaken clergy.
Addressing the congregation, Njenga dismissed claims of political motives, stating, “I didn’t come here because of politics.
In any case, I am a bishop. I heard there was a prayer meeting, and I decided to join you.”
In response to the incident, Rigathi Gachagua condemned Njenga’s actions, accusing the government of orchestrating the disruption.
He stated, “Unleashing the leader of an outlawed criminal gang and his goons to disrupt peaceful prayers and desecrate the altar is the lowest any government can go no matter the level of desperation.”
This event underscores the ongoing rivalry between Njenga and Gachagua, reflecting deepening divisions within Mt. Kenya’s leadership.
