President William Ruto has criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for allegedly inciting Kenyan youth, particularly Generation Z, to engage in protests.
This response came after Kenyatta encouraged young people to actively fight for their rights, stating, “Fight for your rights, sio kukaa hapo mali yenu ichukuliwe na nyinyi mmeitolea jasho!” (Don’t sit back and let what you’ve worked hard for be taken away.)
In reaction, President Ruto emphasized the importance of guiding the youth towards constructive activities rather than confrontation.
He stated, “These young people of Kenya don’t need violence, they don’t need confrontation.
They want opportunities, jobs to engage in business [and] that is what we should be doing as leaders instead of inciting them to violence.”
Ruto urged leaders to focus on creating employment opportunities and fostering a peaceful environment for the nation’s development.
Supporting Ruto’s stance, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale condemned Kenyatta’s remarks, describing them as inciteful and undermining the government’s efforts.
Duale stated, “It is very unfortunate if we the leaders, current and former, set the stage where we tell the young people of our nation to commit acts of violence and disobedience.”
He called upon leaders to encourage the youth to maintain peace and stability, highlighting the need for responsible leadership in addressing the country’s challenges.
