Mathew Nyamlori, Who Sat KCPE Nine Times, Passes Away After Cancer Battle

Mathew Nyamlori, a man widely recognized for his extraordinary determination in academics, has passed away.

Nyamlori, who became a household name for sitting the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations nine times, succumbed to cancer on Monday, January 20.

The news of his passing was shared by his close friend, Okoto Nyuka BeL, who revealed that Nyamlori fought a courageous battle with the illness.

According to the friend, Mathew had made peace with his condition and even expressed some personal requests in the days leading up to his death.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Mathew Nyamlori. He bravely battled cancer with unwavering strength and resilience.

He passed away peacefully at 7:00 a.m. while we were in the process of finalizing his discharge.

Mathew leaves behind a legacy of courage and hope that will forever inspire us. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we thank God for the moments we shared with him.

Rest in peace, Mathew. You truly fought the good fight,” Okoto wrote on social media.

Okoto further shared a touching account of Nyamlori’s final moments. “As his caregivers, his brother and I stayed by his side throughout the night, just as he had requested.

He asked for his wallet, carefully reorganized the cards inside it, and then requested his phone,” he added.

Nyamlori’s struggle with gastric cancer had significantly impacted his health in recent months, as confirmed by sources close to him.

A Story of Academic Resilience

Mathew Nyamlori first captured national attention due to his extraordinary academic journey. Driven by an unyielding determination to secure a scholarship, he sat the KCPE examinations nine times, showcasing his resilience and unwavering commitment to education.

His first attempt at KCPE dates back to the late 1990s when the maximum possible score was 700 marks. Despite his repeated attempts, Nyamlori was not deterred by setbacks.

His efforts were often interrupted by the need to earn a living, leading him to take breaks from school to work in various jobs, including as a casual laborer at a milling factory.

His persistence eventually bore fruit. On his ninth attempt, Nyamlori achieved a score that earned him a scholarship and paved the way for him to join the prestigious Nairobi School.

Academic Achievements and Later Struggles

Nyamlori’s academic journey continued to inspire many. In 2021, he enrolled at Kenyatta University, where he pursued a degree in Public Administration and Policy.

Unfortunately, his health began to deteriorate during this period, and he faced a grueling battle with cancer that would eventually claim his life.

Nyamlori’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the human spirit. His unwavering determination to achieve his dreams, even in the face of insurmountable challenges, will remain an inspiration to many.

As the nation mourns his passing, Mathew Nyamlori’s life serves as a powerful reminder that true success lies not just in achievements but in the resilience and hope we bring to every challenge. Rest in peace, Mathew.
