Three individuals accused of orchestrating fraudulent schemes were apprehended on Tuesday in Nairobi’s Kilimani Estate while attempting to con yet another unsuspecting victim.
Their arrest followed a meticulous sting operation by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which exposed their well-coordinated efforts to defraud innocent Kenyans.
The suspects, who had perfected the art of luring victims with promises of lucrative deals, were caught red-handed while trying to deliver a safe filled with fake currency worth Ksh 154.8 million (approximately 1.2 million counterfeit US dollars).
Alarmed by their suspicious behavior, their latest target had reported the matter to authorities, leading to their arrest.
A History of Fraudulent Activities
This incident is not the first criminal exploit for the trio. The DCI disclosed that they had previously swindled another victim out of Ksh 4.3 million.
Their illegal activities finally caught up with them along Nyerere Road when detectives intercepted them during the handover of the fake money.
“The suspects had their proverbial 40 days cut short when our officers got wind of their scheme,” read a statement from the DCI.
“They were caught attempting to exchange a safe filled with 1.2 million counterfeit US dollars for clean money, just as they had done in previous scams,” the statement added.
Tools of the Trade Seized
During the operation, detectives impounded a Toyota NZE, which the suspects used to transport the safe containing the fake dollars. The safe and its contents were also seized and are being held as evidence.
“A Toyota NZE ferrying the safe was impounded alongside the counterfeit currency. Both the vehicle and the money are now being held as exhibits,” the DCI revealed.
Court Proceedings and Detention
The suspects were arraigned at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court, where police sought custodial orders to detain them for an additional six days until January 27, 2025, to complete their investigations.
“The court has granted our application to detain the suspects at Kilimani Police Station until January 27 to facilitate further investigations,” DCI confirmed.
A Warning Against Quick Profits
Authorities have issued a stern warning to the public against engaging in money laundering schemes or any ventures promising easy and quick returns.
Investigations reveal that several victims have lost valuable assets, including homes and vehicles, after falling prey to similar scams.
Many were duped into offering these assets as collateral for fraudulent deals, only to be left empty-handed with counterfeit money.
Criminal Activities in Kilimani
Nairobi’s Kilimani Estate has emerged as a hotspot for illicit activities, including gold scams, money laundering, and fraud cartels. The area has become a major concern for law enforcement, which continues to face challenges in dismantling these criminal networks.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious dealings to the authorities to curb such fraudulent activities.
