Breaking News: South Sudan shuts down social media for three months – Details Below

South Sudan has implemented a temporary ban on social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok, for a period of up to 90 days.

This action was taken in response to the circulation of graphic videos depicting the alleged killings of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan’s El Gezira state.

The National Communication Authority (NCA) cited concerns over public safety and mental health, stating that the content violated local laws and posed significant threats.

The decision to suspend social media access aims to prevent further violence and unrest within South Sudan.

Following the release of the disturbing videos, riots and retaliatory attacks occurred, leading to the looting of Sudanese-owned businesses and the loss of lives.

The Sudanese military has condemned the violence in El Gezira, referring to it as “individual violations.”

While the government’s intention is to maintain public order, the ban has faced criticism from civil society groups and citizens.

Activists argue that the suspension infringes upon the right to access information and freedom of expression.

They suggest that targeted measures, such as blocking specific accounts responsible for spreading hate speech and misinformation, would be more appropriate than a blanket ban on entire platforms.
