Angry Residents Lock Out Rurii MCA Out of Office Over Unpaid Rent for Three Years
Residents of Rurii ward in Nyandarua took drastic action by locking their Member of County Assembly (MCA) out of his office due to rent arrears that have been piling up for nearly three years.
Frustrated by the prolonged issue, the locals staged demonstrations at the office, supporting the building’s owner, Hannah Wangari, who has been demanding the payment of overdue rent totaling Ksh280,000.
Hannah, a widow, claimed that she had been subjected to intimidation by police officers and county staff after repeatedly following up on the unpaid rent.
She expressed her frustration, accusing the MCA of stalling and providing excuses whenever she sought to resolve the matter.
“I rented this office to the MCA, but for 28 months, I have not received a single payment. He keeps asking for my bank details, identification, and plot information, but nothing comes out of it.
Every time I follow up, he lies to me, saying I need to write a statement for payment to be finalized, but it never happens,” Wangari lamented during the protest.
The angry residents joined her in vowing to keep the MCA’s office closed until the full amount owed was paid.
They also called on Nyandarua Governor Andrew Badilisha to intervene, emphasizing that the MCA’s absence had disrupted vital services in the area, leaving many residents feeling neglected.
“We are asking Governor Badilisha to address this problem with MCA Thinji. We voted for him expecting he would help us with issues like bursaries for our children.
Now the kids are stuck at home, and the office is closed because of unpaid rent,” one resident remarked passionately.
Despite the growing unrest and demands for accountability, the MCA, Thinji, remained silent on the issue, choosing not to release any statement regarding the controversy.
Governor Appeals for National Funding for Unfinished Hospital Project
This standoff comes just days after Governor Andrew Badilisha made a heartfelt appeal to President William Ruto, urging the national government to step in and provide financial support to complete the JM Kariuki Hospital Complex.
The governor explained that the county had exhausted its resources, spending Ksh1 billion on the project, which is still far from completion.
During a visit to the construction site on Thursday, January 23, Badilisha revealed that the project would require an additional Ksh500 million to finalize.
He highlighted that the remaining work involves the installation of critical components, including medical-grade glass, operating theatres, and other mechanical systems essential for the hospital’s functionality.
“The JM Mashujaa structural works are almost complete, but the finishing touches, including the installation of medical equipment and specialized infrastructure, are the most demanding and expensive phase.
We are calling on the national government and any willing donors to support us with Ksh500 million to complete this critical facility,” the governor stated.
The JM Kariuki Hospital Complex, part of the JM Memorial Hospital built to honor Kenya’s socialist politician JM Kariuki, is expected to significantly boost healthcare services in Nyandarua.
Once completed, it will be a Level 6 hospital, sparing residents from the burden of traveling long distances to access specialized medical services.
The completion of the hospital is anticipated to improve healthcare access, reduce costs for residents, and enhance Nyandarua County’s overall healthcare capacity.
Governor Badilisha expressed optimism that with proper funding, the project could soon serve as a beacon of improved healthcare in the region.
