Breaking: 8 Prisoners Escape from Prison [How they Escaped]

Police in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County, are searching for eight inmates who managed to pull off a daring escape from the local prison. The dramatic incident occurred on Sunday, January 26, after the suspects broke out by scaling the facility’s roof and tampering with its structure.

Authorities have identified the escapees as Patrick Karisa, Erickson Mwachofi, Samuel Onyango, Alex Makezi, Edward Maighasho, Robert Mchungwa, Mwangemi Mwanyange, and Joseph Kalama.

These individuals were being held for various offenses, including theft, rape, defilement, causing bodily harm, and burglary.

While the exact details of how the eight inmates managed to evade the guards remain unclear, law enforcement has appealed to the public for assistance.

Civilians who may have information that could lead to the capture of the escapees are urged to report to the nearest authorities immediately.

The escape comes as a blow to Wundanyi Prison, which has maintained a positive reputation over the years.

The last recorded prison break at the facility was in 2018 when an inmate managed to escape but was eventually recaptured after three months.

In recent years, the prison has introduced various rehabilitation programs aimed at preparing inmates for reintegration into society.

The latest incident raises concerns about security measures at the facility and has cast a spotlight on the effectiveness of prison management in the region.

This escape also echoes a similar high-profile case that occurred in Nairobi just months ago. On July 15, 2024, a group of 12 undocumented Eritrean migrants and a suspected serial killer, Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, escaped from a police cell in the capital.

In that case, the prisoners cut through a wire mesh roof to make their way out, leading authorities to suspect insider involvement.

Their escape was discovered during a routine morning check when officers arrived to serve breakfast, only to find the suspects missing. Following the Nairobi incident, eight police officers were arrested on suspicion of aiding the prisoners’ escape.

The Wundanyi escape has now heightened fears over prison security and raises questions about how dangerous inmates can exploit weaknesses in the system to stage their freedom.
