Chief Justice Martha Koome has responded to the Law Society of Kenya’s (LSK) recent announcement of their intention to occupy the Supreme Court. This move by the LSK has drawn significant attention, as they claim their action aims to highlight alleged injustices within the judicial system.
In her statement, CJ Koome expressed concern over the planned action, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting judicial institutions.
She urged the LSK to reconsider their approach, calling for constructive dialogue as the best way to address their grievances.
“The judiciary remains committed to delivering justice fairly and impartially. It is essential for all stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions to strengthen our legal system,” Koome stated.
The Law Society of Kenya had earlier announced plans to occupy the Supreme Court in what they described as a peaceful demonstration.
They allege that the judiciary has failed to act on several critical issues affecting both the legal profession and the public at large.
Among their complaints are delays in delivering judgments, alleged corruption within the judiciary, and what they term as selective justice.
CJ Koome, however, urged the LSK to uphold professionalism and seek alternative methods to address their concerns.
She highlighted the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to reform and improve service delivery, acknowledging that while challenges exist, progress is being made.
“We understand the frustrations that come with delays and other systemic issues. However, any form of protest that disrupts the functioning of the judiciary undermines the very justice we all strive to uphold,” she added.
The LSK’s announcement has sparked a mixed reaction among Kenyans, with some supporting their bold stance, while others criticize the move as extreme and potentially counterproductive. Legal experts and civil society groups have also weighed in, with some urging both parties to engage in dialogue to avoid escalating tensions.
This situation sheds light on the broader issues within Kenya’s legal system, including access to justice, efficiency in the courts, and the need for greater transparency. Both the judiciary and the LSK play critical roles in ensuring justice for all, and their cooperation is vital for the betterment of the country.
As the date for the planned occupation approaches, Kenyans are keenly watching to see if a resolution will be reached. The outcome of this standoff could set a significant precedent for how disagreements between key players in the legal system are addressed in the future.
