Alfred Mutua’s Allies Reject Calls to Merge with UDA
Tensions between Alfred Mutua’s Maendeleo Chap Chap Party and President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have surfaced once again, with some members openly rejecting any possibility of a merger.
A section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) has strongly opposed the idea, dismissing claims that Mutua’s party is considering folding into UDA to gain more political influence, particularly in the Ukambani region.
Speaking on the matter, Minority Leader Judas Mbili Ndawa made it clear that Maendeleo Chap Chap remains an independent party with a strong presence.
“Maendeleo Chap Chap is a party that stands on its own. We have 12 members in the National Assembly, and we are not a small party. In the Ukambani region, we are the second-largest political party after Wiper,” Ndawa asserted.
He further accused certain individuals of attempting to push for the party’s dissolution without consulting its leadership or members.
“There are those who want this party to be disbanded, but let me be very clear—we have not held any discussions or meetings about a merger,” he emphasized.
UDA Allies Pile Pressure on Mutua
The MCAs also took a swipe at Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya, who recently issued a tough ultimatum to Alfred Mutua, pressuring him to dissolve Maendeleo Chap Chap and merge with UDA.
On January 25, Kawaya publicly warned Mutua, telling him to fold his party or risk impeachment.
“I want to assure you that we are closely monitoring the situation. Some leaders are using their positions to serve their personal interests. Things will not continue as usual,” Kawaya declared.
The MP further insisted that if Mutua truly supports President Ruto’s administration, there should be no reason for his party to remain independent.
“If he fully supports the president, why is he refusing to fold his party when even Musalia Mudavadi, who leads a much bigger party, has already done so?” Kawaya questioned.
He went on to claim that the continued existence of smaller parties, like Maendeleo Chap Chap, goes against the president’s interests and only serves to promote tribal politics.
“If someone is unwilling to fold a party with just two members, then you can tell he has a different agenda. It is in the president’s best interest that such small parties merge because they only represent tribal interests,” he added.
Rising Political Tensions in Kenya
With political temperatures rising in the country, fresh alliances and shifting loyalties have caused unease among political players.
Recently, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka made headlines after forming a new political alliance with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is widely seen as one of President Ruto’s biggest rivals.
Kalonzo’s unexpected collaboration with Gachagua, which is based on shared political interests, has sparked intense debate, especially in the Ukambani region, which is considered a key battleground during elections.
As political realignments continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how these developments will shape the country’s political landscape in the coming months.
