IG Kanja Appears in Court and Addresses Disappearance of Mlolongo Three

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja appeared in court on Thursday after previously ignoring summons related to the disappearance of three brothers from Mlolongo in December.

During his appearance before Justice Chacha Mwita at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, Kanja clarified that the three brothers were not in police custody.

Kanja addressed the court, stating, “Your Honor, I confirm that we do not have any of the individuals in question in our custody. They are not in any of the police stations.”

He assured the court that the National Police Service (NPS) had been actively investigating the disappearance and that as soon as the police were informed about the missing individuals, he instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to begin a thorough investigation.

DCI Director Amin also confirmed that the investigation into the missing brothers was ongoing. He added that once the investigation is complete, the file will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

“We are diligently working on the investigation, and once it is finished, we will forward the findings to the ODPP,” Amin said.

Amin also reiterated that the missing individuals were not in the custody of the National Police Service. “I want to confirm once again that they have not been arrested, and they are not in our custody,” he stated.

However, he made it clear that the police could not fulfill the court’s order to present the missing brothers in court, as their whereabouts remain uncertain.

“We are unable to present them because they are not in our custody, and we cannot charge them until we locate them,” he explained.

Kanja and Amin had missed several previous court hearings regarding the case, which had raised questions about their commitment to appearing before the court.

However, Kanja had earlier stated he would comply with the court orders when he was ready. “I will appear in court when the time comes,” he told reporters in Kwale County on January 23.

This court appearance followed a ruling by Justice Mwita, who confirmed that both Kanja and Amin had been properly served with summons regarding the abduction case of the three men from Mlolongo.

Following their appearance in court, Kanja and Amin were allowed to leave the chambers, although the court continued to hear the case.

As the investigation continues, Kenyans are eagerly awaiting updates on the court’s decision, and the progress of the case will be closely followed.
