Violence Erupts in Mt. Kenya As Another Suspected Mungiki Member Killed as Several Houses Set on Fire in Mt. Kenya

A suspected member of the outlawed Mungiki sect has been killed, and several houses were set on fire in the South Ngariama ranching scheme in Murinduko ward, Mwea-East.

The violent incident occurred after residents, frustrated by the Mungiki group’s activities in the area, took action to drive them out.

According to local reports, over 500 residents from South Ngariama banded together to confront the suspected Mungiki members, who had allegedly been extorting money from the locals and stealing livestock. In the chaos, seven semi-permanent houses were set ablaze on one day, and more than ten others were burned the following day.

“We set seven semi-permanent houses on fire yesterday, and today we’ve set over ten more ablaze. As we speak, more houses are being torched,” one resident shared.

The residents’ anger stemmed from the Mungiki group’s illegal activities. Peter Maingi, one of the locals, explained, “We had enough after they started extorting us and stealing our livestock.

Yesterday, we killed one of them, and the rest managed to escape with injuries. Last night, we killed another one as we continue to push them out.”

The locals suspect that more than 30 Mungiki members had been living within the scheme, and they had taken several plots of land from the residents by force.

These members were reportedly planning to take even more land, which led to their violent confrontation with the locals.

“They wanted to force one resident off his land, but the residents fought back. Despite being armed with various weapons, we overpowered them. One of them was killed, and his body was set on fire,” said Peter Wanjohi, another local resident.

The community’s frustration has been growing, as they accuse the Mungiki group of not only taking land but also forging land documents, causing confusion among the residents.

William Muthike, a concerned local, added, “We don’t want them here anymore. We want them expelled because they’ve been extorting money and forcefully taking our land.

This man had been using the group to forge our land titles, creating chaos in this community. We’ve had enough of this.”

The situation remains tense as the community takes matters into their own hands, driven by the belief that they must protect their land and livelihoods from the threat posed by the Mungiki sect.
