A tragic plane crash in Naivasha has claimed the lives of two people after a light aircraft went down at Kedong Ranch on Thursday evening.
Naivasha OCPD Charles Mwai confirmed the incident, stating that rescue teams had been dispatched immediately. However, the operation faced significant challenges due to rough terrain and unfavorable weather conditions.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) also confirmed the crash, revealing that it happened at around 5:14 PM on Thursday.
“KCAA regrets to confirm that a Cessna 185 aircraft was involved in an accident yesterday at Kedong Ranch, Naivasha.
There were two people on board, and unfortunately, both lost their lives. The Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) was first informed about the accident by a member of the public,” the aviation authority stated in a report.
Preliminary reports indicate that the two victims had taken off from Wilson Airport and were heading to Mbaruk when the crash occurred. The aircraft reportedly departed from Wilson Airport at approximately 1:30 PM before it crashed hours later.
As of now, the exact cause of the accident remains unclear. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what led to the tragic incident.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly into the night, but due to the difficult conditions, the Naivasha police boss stated that operations would resume on Friday morning.
Following the crash, authorities secured the scene, and investigators arrived to assess the wreckage and gather evidence to understand the cause of the accident.
Recent History of Light Aircraft Accidents in Kenya
This is not the first time a small aircraft crash has resulted in fatalities in Kenya. On January 11, a separate tragic incident occurred in Malindi, where three people lost their lives after a plane crash-landed and burst into flames in the Kwa Chocha area.
The ill-fated aircraft had just taken off from Malindi Airport when it developed mechanical problems. The pilot attempted an emergency landing in an open field, but unfortunately, the plane crashed along the Malindi-Mombasa Highway, leading to the tragic deaths of two boda boda riders and a pillion passenger.
Despite the severity of the crash, the pilot, a flight attendant, and a student onboard miraculously survived with only minor injuries. They were quickly rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Authorities continue to urge caution and thorough investigations into such incidents to improve air safety and prevent future tragedies.
