In early January 2025, during the funeral of Eric Mutugi, son of former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi faced significant public backlash.

As he attempted to read a condolence message from President William Ruto, mourners in Embu loudly rejected it, expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of recent abductions.

This incident highlights the growing frustration among Kenyans regarding unresolved cases of abductions and the perceived lack of government action.

In the aftermath, CS Muturi disclosed that he faced internal criticism from government officials who accused him of inciting the public.

He was reportedly reprimanded by a senior official for failing to manage the crowd effectively. This situation underscores the challenges within the government in addressing public dissent and the complexities of internal dynamics when officials express concerns about state actions.

The incident in Embu has sparked broader discussions about the government’s response to abductions and the treatment of officials who voice dissent.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua criticized President Ruto for allegedly sending abusive messages to CS Muturi after the funeral heckling, accusing him of inciting the public.

This exchange reflects the tensions within the administration and the challenges of maintaining unity while addressing public grievances.
