Brian Odhiambo’s Mother Collapses in Court After Judge Declines to Issue Further Orders
The Nakuru Law Courts on Thursday, February 6, refused to grant additional orders in the case concerning the mysterious disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, who was allegedly taken by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers.
Justice Julius Nangea, in his ruling, stated that there was no solid evidence proving that Odhiambo was in the custody of KWS officers.
This decision deeply shattered Odhiambo’s mother, Elizabeth Auma, who broke down in tears inside the courtroom. Overcome with grief, she fell to her knees, unable to hold back her pain and frustration.
Many members of the public believe that Brian Odhiambo, a well-known local fisherman, went missing on January 18 after being confronted by KWS officers while fishing in a restricted section of Lake Nakuru National Park. Witnesses claim that the officers arrested him, and he has not been seen since.
Following his disappearance, furious residents, particularly the youth, launched massive protests. Demonstrators stormed the entrance of Lake Nakuru National Park, demanding answers and calling for Odhiambo’s release.
They blocked the main road leading to the park by lighting bonfires and placing large stones on the road, preventing tourists and other visitors from accessing the park.
Amid growing pressure, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested six KWS officers suspected of being involved in Odhiambo’s disappearance.
However, KWS has maintained that while their officers did arrest a man for illegal fishing in the sewage area of Lake Nakuru National Park, they did not take down his name.
In a shocking turn of events, one of the KWS officers assigned to guard the arrested man provided a sworn statement claiming that the suspect had escaped while in custody.
The officer, identified as Abdulrahman Sudi, stated in his affidavit that the arrested man—whom he later identified as Brian Odhiambo—had asked to relieve himself while under detention.
Sudi claimed that when he allowed Odhiambo to do so, the fisherman took the opportunity to flee. According to the ranger, he made efforts to recapture him but was unsuccessful.
Sudi, who serves as a driver within KWS, denied allegations that Odhiambo was assaulted or harmed while in their custody.
Meanwhile, Odhiambo’s family continues to live in anguish. His mother and wife have made emotional public appeals, pleading with authorities to help them find their loved one.
The uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts has not only devastated his family but has also alarmed human rights activists and the general public, who now fear the worst.
With over two weeks gone since he was last seen, many Kenyans are anxiously wondering whether Brian Odhiambo is still alive or if his disappearance will become another unresolved case.
