TikTok has revealed that it deleted more than 334,000 videos from its platform in the third quarter of last year for violating its community guidelines.
This was part of its ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and trustworthy space for its users.
The platform’s Q3 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, released on February 6, disclosed that 93% of the videos were removed within just 24 hours of being flagged.
This initiative highlights TikTok’s commitment to enforcing content moderation in Kenya. The company stated that the videos were removed for several reasons, including content that lacked authenticity and integrity, as well as those that negatively impacted mental and behavioral health.
Other videos were taken down for violating youth safety and well-being or containing sensitive themes that were considered inappropriate for certain audiences.
TikTok emphasized that it is actively working to create a safe environment for Kenyans to express themselves, connect, and be entertained.
This includes investing in advanced technology, building trust and safety teams, and forming local partnerships to strengthen content moderation efforts.
On a global scale, TikTok removed over 147 million videos during the same period. A significant portion of these, 118 million videos, were detected and deleted using automated systems.
The report underlined that while the platform’s primary mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy to its users, it is equally committed to ensuring user safety and maintaining the integrity of the content shared.
Interestingly, the number of deleted videos from Kenya in Q3 represents a decrease compared to the previous quarter, where over 360,000 Kenyan videos were removed as part of the company’s efforts to foster a safer and more positive user experience.
TikTok pointed out that the 360,000 videos accounted for 0.3% of all videos uploaded by Kenyan users during that period.
In addition to deleting videos, TikTok also banned 60,464 Kenyan accounts for violating the community guidelines. Another 57,262 accounts were removed because they were suspected to be run by minors.
The platform further explained that in June of the previous year alone, it removed over 178 million videos globally, with 144 million of these being automatically detected and taken down by its systems.
Through these efforts, TikTok continues to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to ensuring that the platform remains a secure space for all users, especially in Kenya, while continuing to promote creativity and fun.
