Kalonzo Reveals Phone Call With Raila & Uhuru After Court Declares Azimio Majority in National Assembly
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that he plans to convene a meeting with all officials of the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, including members from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Jubilee Party.
This meeting comes in the wake of a landmark High Court ruling that declared the Azimio coalition as the majority in the National Assembly.
A three-judge bench consisting of Justices John Chigiti, Jairus Ngaah, and Lawrence Mugambi overturned National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s decision, which had declared Kenya Kwanza as the majority coalition.
The court ruled that Wetang’ula’s pronouncement violated the Constitution, stating that he had acted unreasonably by recognizing 14 Azimio MPs as new members of Kenya Kwanza.
Following the court’s decision, Kalonzo, while addressing mourners at a funeral in Kitui County on Saturday, disclosed that he had made a phone call to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday. He revealed that they discussed the way forward for the coalition in light of the court ruling.
According to Kalonzo, the Azimio leadership has scheduled a crucial meeting on Wednesday, where all coalition principals will deliberate on the next steps.
Additionally, he stated that all Azimio-affiliated Members of Parliament will convene to reorganize their roles based on the court’s ruling.
“The situation now is that Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya is officially the majority coalition in Parliament. I have already spoken to Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta.
We have planned a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting on Wednesday, which will follow another internal meeting on Tuesday to strategize and organize ourselves,” Kalonzo stated.
Taking a swipe at President William Ruto’s administration, Kalonzo asserted that the court’s ruling was a major embarrassment for many politicians in the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
He noted that the decision was also a lesson for former Azimio members who defected to Ruto’s camp out of impatience and lack of trust in the coalition.
“Those who rushed to praise Ruto must be feeling uncomfortable right now. You should have been patient and waited. Some of our friends who defected to Kenya Kwanza need to reflect on their choices,” Kalonzo remarked.
He also criticized four former ODM politicians—now Cabinet Secretaries—John Mbadi, Opiyo Wandayi, Hassan Joho, and Wycliffe Oparanya, who joined Ruto’s government in August following anti-government protests led by the youth.
In particular, he took aim at Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, suggesting that he might be facing an embarrassing situation following the court’s ruling.
Kalonzo hinted that some of these leaders may now find themselves politically stranded, as the ruling reaffirmed Azimio’s dominance in Parliament.
