Police officers on Sunday night arrested a notorious highway robber who had been targeting truck drivers along the Isiolo-Garbatula Junction.
The dramatic arrest unfolded after a high-speed chase that ended with the suspect crashing into a tree near Archer’s Police Post.
According to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, a 36-year-old man, had been using a deceptive tactic to lure his victims.
He would pose as a stranded traveler, flagging down vehicles and requesting a ride, only to turn against the drivers once inside their vehicles.
On the night of his arrest, the suspect applied the same trick when he stopped a Mitsubishi lorry at the Isiolo-Garbatula Junction, pretending to need a lift to Archer’s Town.
The truck driver, showing kindness, agreed to give him a ride.
However, upon reaching Archer’s Town, instead of getting off as agreed, the suspect pulled out a knife and threatened the driver, forcing him to continue driving towards a different location of his choosing.
Sensing danger, the driver made a split-second decision to save himself. He bravely jumped out of the moving lorry, escaping unharmed, and rushed to a nearby police post to report the incident.
Officers at the station immediately launched a manhunt, setting up a rapid-response team to track down the fleeing suspect.
Meanwhile, unaware that law enforcement was closing in on him, the suspect attempted to drive the stolen lorry toward Isiolo Town, opting for an unfamiliar murram road to shake off any possible pursuit.
However, his escape plan backfired, as he unknowingly drove straight toward Archer’s Police Post, where officers had already laid a trap.
Realizing too late that he was heading into a police ambush, panic took over, and he lost control of the stolen lorry.
In his desperate bid to evade capture, he veered off the road and crashed into a tree right outside the police station.
Officers quickly surrounded the crash site and arrested him on the spot. Upon searching him, they discovered he was carrying a panga, a knife, and a screwdriver, confirming that he was well-armed and dangerous.
Authorities have since confirmed that the suspect is linked to multiple highway robberies in the area and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
