Learning has been suspended indefinitely at Nakuru High School after students went on a rampage on the night of Sunday, February 9.
The chaos erupted over various grievances, with the main issue being dissatisfaction with the food provided at the school.
Reports indicate that the well-organized protest started at around 8:50 pm and lasted for nearly six hours before police were called in to restore order.
During the unrest, students vandalized several school facilities, including the administration block, classrooms, and dormitories.
In a dramatic twist, some of the rioters broke into the dining hall and food storage room, stealing food items. Some students were even seen consuming the stolen food on the spot.
It has since emerged that one of the key reasons behind the protest was the administration’s decision to remove a particular meal from the school’s menu.
According to students, they were accustomed to having tea and bread during their mid-morning break, but the school scrapped it without prior notice.
Additionally, the students were unhappy about the introduction of a card payment system in the school canteen, as they preferred using cash instead.
Another major complaint was the removal of milk from their morning tea, which they felt negatively impacted their welfare.
The students were also frustrated by the lack of progress in upgrading the school’s entertainment facilities.
They claimed that despite paying a small fee meant to improve these amenities, no noticeable changes had been made.
The standoff lasted for hours until police officers, alongside Nakuru County Director of Education Victoria Mulili, stepped in to calm the situation.
By Monday, February 10, the school had been completely deserted after students were sent home indefinitely.
Sources suggest that the institution could remain closed for at least a week as authorities assess the damage and address the students’ concerns.
This incident adds to a growing list of student unrest cases in Kenya. Just two weeks earlier, students from Teremi High School in Bungoma County staged a strike in protest of poor KCSE results.
In their demonstration, they stormed the principal’s residence, causing extensive damage to his house and vehicle.
