Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, recently spoke about the issues surrounding President William Ruto and the alleged betrayal by the Head of State.
Despite these allegations, Gachagua assured that the people of Mt Kenya are willing to forgive Ruto, though they will not forget what transpired.
He made these remarks during the consecration service of Bishop George Gathari in Olkalou, Nyandarua County, where he emphasized that the Mt Kenya region would carefully consider its next steps.
Gachagua stated that the people of Mt Kenya will engage in thorough consultations before making a decision on which presidential candidate to support in the future. He stressed that the region would not base its decision on mere promises but would evaluate the track record of potential candidates.
His words were a response to claims that the region had been misled into supporting Ruto during the 2022 elections. According to Gachagua, once Ruto assumed office as President, the Mt Kenya region felt neglected, which led to feelings of betrayal.
Reflecting on his personal experiences, Gachagua shared a story about how a former ally, whom he had supported significantly, had turned his back on him after Ruto became president.
He expressed how his former friend, who once called him “Riggy G” and “Baba Kevin,” now labeled him a tribalist.
“We now depend solely on God, as human beings can be unpredictable,” Gachagua said. He added that people from the region have become cautious and are now careful about who they support, vowing to conduct thorough background checks on anyone seeking their support.
On the topic of forgiveness, Gachagua also touched on the growing issue of abductions and killings, particularly of young people who have voiced opposition to Ruto’s administration.
He stated that while those responsible for these crimes would be forgiven, their actions would never be forgotten.
Gachagua firmly believed that the youth did not deserve to be abducted or killed simply for disagreeing with the government.
Furthermore, Gachagua addressed the recent removal of some of his political allies from important Senate positions. He mentioned that these individuals, including Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu, should not be concerned about their dismissals from their committee roles.
Gachagua reassured them that their true position is not in a committee chairperson role but in the trust and support of the people they represent.
“As long as the people of Nyandarua are happy with you, you have nothing to worry about,” he said, urging them to focus on serving the community rather than being preoccupied with titles.
