Youths from Kericho Urge President Ruto to Appoint Young Leaders
A group of young people from Kericho County has made a special appeal to President William Ruto, urging him to consider youth representation in the upcoming appointments of Principal Secretaries.
Speaking on behalf of the youth, Elkana Mutai, who serves as the Kericho County Youth President, emphasized the need for young leaders to be included in key government positions.
He stated that young people have the skills and potential to contribute to national development, and their involvement in leadership would create more opportunities for others.
“We have gathered here today to request President Ruto to ensure that young people are given leadership roles, especially in the appointment of Principal Secretaries.
We believe it is time for the youth to take an active role in shaping the future of this country,” Mutai stated.
The youth group specifically called on President Ruto to appoint two candidates from Kericho County who had been shortlisted for the prestigious roles.
They are advocating for Vincent Kigen, the current chairperson of the National Employment Authority, and Joseph Limo, the former Member of Parliament for Kipkelion East.
This appeal follows the Public Service Commission’s (PSC) recent announcement that it had shortlisted 109 candidates for various Principal Secretary positions.
The selection process attracted a total of 2,517 applicants, following an advertisement published on November 20, 2024, inviting qualified Kenyans to apply for the positions.
The PSC made this announcement through official notices on its website and social media platforms.
Among the notable names shortlisted alongside Kigen and Limo are former Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu, social media influencer Gabriel Oguda, and former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion.
Others on the list include former Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) board chairperson Anne Makori, former Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Managing Director Macharia Irungu, Director General for Health Patrick Amoth, and former Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General Fredrick Ouma.
The Public Service Commission has assured the public that all shortlisted candidates will undergo a vetting process, with the exact dates to be communicated soon.
This call for youth inclusion comes months after President Ruto made significant changes to his cabinet in 2024.
These adjustments saw several Cabinet Secretaries dropped from their positions, with some members of the opposition being incorporated into the government.
With the ongoing appointments, young leaders from Kericho and across the country are hopeful that the president will consider their plea and give them a chance to contribute to national leadership.
