Juja MP George Koimburi Charged With Forgery 30 Years Later, Raising Political Questions
A fresh controversy has erupted over why the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has chosen to charge Juja MP George Koimburi with forging academic certificates nearly three decades after the alleged offence.
Koimburi, who has been in office since winning the 2021 by-election, appeared at the Kiambu Law Courts on Wednesday, where he denied six counts of forgery.
According to the charge sheet, the legislator is accused of falsifying a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1994, allegedly to gain admission into higher learning institutions.
In addition to the KCSE certificate, he is also said to have forged a Human Resource Development certificate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) along with other academic documents.
The timing of his prosecution has sparked debate, especially since the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is responsible for verifying the academic qualifications of all political candidates before they are cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for office.
Despite this vetting process, Koimburi’s certificates had previously passed scrutiny, allowing him to contest and win the Juja parliamentary seat in 2021.
His sudden arrest took place on Tuesday morning as he was leaving his home along Kenyatta Road in Juja. He was taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for interrogation before being transferred to Kamukunji Police Station, where he spent the night after being denied bail.
The charges against him indicate that he presented the allegedly forged KCSE certificate at the EACC offices on March 8, 2021. On the same day, he also submitted the disputed JKUAT documents.
Investigators believe these forgeries were used to boost his academic credentials, making him appear more qualified for both professional and political opportunities.
However, the charges have fueled speculation that they are politically motivated. Koimburi was arrested just days after openly criticizing the government over its reported use of Ksh13 billion to support Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, argues that the charges are a political tool meant to intimidate and silence his client due to his outspoken stance against the government.
Njiru insists that the sudden revival of the forgery allegations—three decades after the alleged offence—raises serious questions about the real motive behind the case.
After spending Tuesday night in police custody, Koimburi was released on a Ksh200,000 bond.
His legal troubles have deepened the growing rift between President William Ruto and allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with Koimburi being a known supporter of Gachagua.
Political analysts see this as part of a larger strategy to weaken Gachagua’s influence within the ruling coalition by targeting his close associates.
As the case unfolds, many are watching closely to see whether it is truly about justice or if it is another example of political power struggles playing out through the courts.
