Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati Passes Away While Undergoing Treatment
Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.
His death comes just days after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following a period of treatment at home. Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, he succumbed while still under medical care.
A close family member confirmed the sad news to newshub.co.ke on Friday morning. However, the exact cause of his death has not yet been disclosed. Although news of his illness had been widely shared on social media, sources close to the matter have remained silent about the specifics of his condition.
Chebukati served as the IEBC chairperson for six years before retiring in 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2017 and 2022 General Elections, a period that saw significant political events and electoral challenges.
Early Life and Education
Born on December 22, 1961, Wafula Chebukati grew up in Kenya and pursued his education at Lenana High School in Nairobi County. He later joined the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
In addition to his legal studies, he furthered his education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Career and Political Journey
Chebukati was a long-serving member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). His first major political appearance was in 2007 when he contested for the Saboti parliamentary seat under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
Despite his efforts, he lost to Eugene Wamalwa, who ran on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket. Following his loss, Chebukati distanced himself from ODM and later pursued a different path in public service.
His career took a significant turn when he applied for the IEBC chairperson position. He was later appointed to the role by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, a position he held until his retirement in 2023.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1990, Chebukati married his wife, Mary Chebukati, and together they were blessed with three children—two sons, Jonathan and Emmanuel, and a daughter, Rachael.
As of 2022, his net worth was estimated at Ksh120 million, and he earned a gross monthly salary of approximately Ksh900,000 as the IEBC chairperson.
His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Kenya’s electoral history, as he was known for steering the country’s elections through challenging times. His contributions to Kenya’s democracy will be remembered for years to come.
