Chebukati’s Family Requests Privacy as They Mourn, Plans to Issue Statement
The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has urged Kenyans to respect their privacy as they mourn their loved one. They have asked the public and the media to give them space during this difficult time.
Speaking to journalists on Friday morning, the family’s spokesperson, Eric Wafula, mentioned that they would release an official statement soon regarding Chebukati’s passing.
“We are all deeply saddened by this loss. As the family tries to come to terms with it, we kindly request everyone, including the media, to allow us privacy as we mourn,” said the spokesperson.
He further stated that a formal statement would be issued on Saturday after a family meeting scheduled for Friday evening. “We will communicate officially once we conclude the discussions,” he added.
According to Wafula, Chebukati’s close family members, including his father, traveled to Nairobi immediately after learning about his passing on Thursday night.
While addressing speculation surrounding the former IEBC chairperson’s death, Wafula confirmed that Chebukati had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi. He passed away on Thursday, February 20, shortly before 11 p.m., after battling an illness for a long time. However, the family has not yet disclosed the specific illness he was suffering from.
Regarding a possible post-mortem examination, the family stated that they had not yet made a decision. This matter will be discussed during Friday’s family meeting, and the way forward will depend on the input from medical professionals.
“All I can confirm is that he had been unwell and was admitted to the hospital, where he passed away around 11 p.m. last night. The family has not yet decided whether a post-mortem will be conducted,” Wafula explained.
He added that once they consult the doctors and agree on the way forward, they will provide further details on the cause of death. “We will only make an official statement once we have the necessary information. Until then, we urge the public not to engage in speculation,” he said.
The family’s press briefing took place just two hours after initial reports emerged confirming Chebukati’s passing at a Nairobi hospital.
Meanwhile, Chebukati’s body has been transferred to the Lee Funeral Home, where it will remain as the family finalizes their decisions regarding a post-mortem and funeral arrangements.
In the wake of his passing, several leaders from across the country have taken to social media to express their condolences. Among them is President William Ruto, who described Chebukati as a principled and dedicated leader who served Kenya with integrity.
“I have received the heartbreaking news of the passing of former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with deep sorrow. He was a committed and principled leader who always upheld integrity in his service to the nation,” Ruto stated.
“His death is a significant loss to the country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult moment. May he rest in peace,” he added.
