In a startling revelation, President William Ruto disclosed that there was a direct attempt to abduct and murder Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), during the August 2022 elections.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, on January 17, 2023, Ruto detailed how certain actors sought to compromise the electoral process by threatening Chebukati to alter the presidential results.

The President commended Chebukati and his team for their unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process, despite facing significant threats and financial inducements.

Tragically, Wafula Chebukati passed away on February 20, 2025, after a prolonged battle with brain cancer. He had been receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, where he underwent two surgeries to remove a tumor. Despite these efforts, his condition remained critical, leading to his demise.

Chebukati’s tenure as IEBC chairperson was marked by his steadfast dedication to democratic principles, overseeing two general elections in 2017 and 2022.

His leadership during these tumultuous periods earned him both praise and criticism, reflecting the complex nature of electoral politics in Kenya.

Following his death, an outpouring of tributes highlighted Chebukati’s significant contributions to Kenya’s democratic process. President Ruto described him as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula lauded Chebukati as an eminent jurist and steadfast defender of the rule of law.

These accolades underscore the profound impact Chebukati had on the country’s electoral landscape, with many acknowledging his role in steering the IEBC through challenging times.

The Chebukati family has requested privacy during this difficult time and has urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the circumstances of his death.

Family spokesperson Eric Nyongesa emphasized that decisions regarding a post-mortem examination were still pending and that an official statement would be released in due course. This appeal for discretion highlights the family’s desire to mourn their loss away from public scrutiny.

Wafula Chebukati’s legacy is characterized by his unwavering commitment to upholding the democratic will of the Kenyan people. Despite facing immense pressure, threats, and attempts at coercion, he remained resolute in his duty to ensure free and fair elections.

His tenure at the IEBC serves as a testament to the importance of integrity and courage in the face of adversity, setting a standard for future leaders in electoral governance.
