Worshippers in Bomet Set Elderly Woman on Fire Over Witchcraft Allegations
In a shocking incident, worshippers at a church in Kapkwen, Bomet County, set an elderly woman on fire on Saturday, claiming they were purging her of so-called ‘evil’ possessions.
According to reports, the congregants accused the woman of practicing witchcraft, alleging that she was in possession of sinister items such as snakes and frogs.
Believing these were linked to evil spirits, they insisted that burning her was the only way to remove them.
Gruesome Ritual Captured on Video
A disturbing video seen by newshub.co.ke captured the horrifying moment when church ushers, under the direction of their pastor, placed the elderly woman in the middle of an open field. They tied her up as the rest of the congregation watched, some even laughing.
In the footage, some church ushers could be seen setting a fire while others held the woman by her hands and legs, placing her directly over the flames and turning her around. Meanwhile, some worshippers chanted prayers as the terrifying ritual unfolded.
One congregant, speaking about the incident, justified their actions, saying, “She came to church with other witches, and she had evil possessions. She carried snakes, frogs, and even some evil spirits. Luckily, the pastor was able to pray for her and remove them.”
The individual went on to claim that burning her was necessary to ensure the complete removal of the alleged spirits. “We couldn’t just leave her with them. Since she came to us for help, we had to make sure they were fully cast out,” they added.
Victim Seriously Injured but Survives
Despite the brutal ordeal, the elderly woman miraculously survived, though she suffered severe burns.
The pastor of the church also claimed that in addition to the so-called ‘evil’ animals, they discovered books, strands of people’s hair, and other items, which they believed were tools she used for witchcraft.
Police Take Action, Close Down Church
Following this horrifying incident, authorities intervened and shut down the church. Investigations revealed that the congregation was involved in more than just burning people—they also engaged in physical punishment, including caning congregants in what they described as rituals to expel demons.
The events came to light after two women, unable to bear witnessing the brutal acts, fled from the ritual and reported the matter at Kapkwen Police Station. Their report led law enforcement to take swift action against the church.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the church’s closure and stated that investigations are ongoing.
Officers are also searching for the key suspects, who have since gone into hiding. Additionally, police are working to determine whether the church was legally registered.
This disturbing case has sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter regulations on religious practices to prevent such acts of violence.
