Veteran KTN News Anchor Njoroge Mwaura Passes Away

Renowned journalist and former KTN news anchor Njoroge Mwaura has passed away. His wife, Lucy Njoroge, confirmed his death on Monday, February 24. She revealed that Mwaura breathed his last at a hospital in Nairobi after experiencing complications following surgery. However, the exact illness leading to his demise was not disclosed.

Mwaura was a respected figure in the media industry, widely known for his segment, Njoroge’s Notebook, where he tackled various national issues.

He played a key role in mentoring young journalists, earning him the title The TV Legend. His articulate delivery and commanding presence on screen set a high standard for journalism, making him one of the pioneers who paved the way for the prime-time news anchors Kenyans admire today.

His career in journalism began at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where he started as a young news anchor. Later, he transitioned to the Kenya Television Network (KTN) during its early days, marking a significant milestone in his career.

At the time, his move to KTN was seen as groundbreaking since the station was among the first private broadcasters in the country.

Mwaura also worked closely with the late Catherine Kasavuli, another media icon who passed away in 2022 at the age of 60. The two co-anchored news together in the late 1990s and early 2000s, forming one of the most memorable news duos in Kenya’s television history.

In 2012, after briefly stepping away from journalism, Mwaura was called back to KTN to help with the station’s rebranding efforts. He officially retired from broadcasting in 2013, leaving behind a rich legacy of mentorship and excellence that inspired a new generation of journalists.

His passing comes just days after the death of another legendary broadcaster, Leonard Mambo Mbotela. Mbotela, famous for his long-running radio and TV program Jee, Huu ni Ungwana, passed away on Friday, February 7, at a Nairobi hospital after a remarkable six-decade career in media.

His death was mourned across the nation, with President William Ruto describing him as a “gifted and powerful broadcaster whose captivating voice dominated the airwaves with his top-tier commentaries.”

With Mwaura’s passing, Kenya has lost yet another media trailblazer whose contributions shaped the industry for years to come.
