First Lady Rachel Ruto has announced the commencement of a pilot milk programme aimed at benefiting school-going children across the country.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to improve children’s health and energy levels, ensuring they can learn effectively.
The pilot programme, which will begin in schools within Migori County, is being conducted in collaboration with the State Department for Livestock Development and the Kenya Dairy Board.
In an official notice dated March 6, the First Lady revealed that the launch will take place in Migori, with the first distribution of milk set for March 7 at 11 am.

School children in Nyatike Constituency will be the first to receive the milk, which will be provided by the Kenya Dairy Board.
The milk, which will be distributed in special packets designed to prevent tampering, is part of a nutritional initiative aimed at supporting the growth and development of students.
This packaging is a safeguard against dishonest individuals who might try to resell the milk, ensuring that it reaches the children in its intended form.
At the event, which will also feature key figures such as Agriculture Principal Secretaries Julius Mueke and Joseph Motari, as well as Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko and other local officials, the First Lady will officially launch the programme.
The occasion will be held at Isebania Mixed Primary School and Bondo Kosiemo Primary School, both of which are part of the Feed One, End Hunger Agenda.
The milk programme follows a trend set by other leaders across Kenya, who have introduced similar initiatives for children, especially in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE).
Notable examples include Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who recently rolled out free milk programmes for ECDE schools in their counties.
Governor Natembeya, in particular, invested Ksh750 million last year to provide milk to over 41,000 ECDE children across 434 schools.
This initiative, which ensures the children receive free milk twice a week, has been welcomed by many. “I urge teachers to safeguard this programme to help achieve its objectives.
It is crucial that the milk is only consumed within the school grounds and not taken away by students,” Natembeya emphasized.

Through this milk programme, First Lady Rachel Ruto joins the growing list of leaders working towards improving children’s nutrition and education across Kenya.
