Ruto Vows to Respect Raila in New Political Deal

President William Ruto has assured former Prime Minister Raila Odinga of the respect he deserves, making an emotional promise during a significant political event on Friday, March 7.

Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) during the signing of a political cooperation agreement between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Ruto pledged to uphold Raila’s dignity and ensure he is treated with honor.

“I called my brother and told him, ‘You have been my party leader before, and you are my senior. Today, by God’s grace, I am the president, but I want to make sure that you are treated with the respect you deserve. I will do everything within my power to make that happen,’” Ruto assured.

He further explained that his commitment was not driven by personal gain but rather by respect for Raila’s experience and contributions to the nation.

“I am doing this not for my own benefit but because I recognize that you are my elder, not just in age but also in your role in shaping Kenya. Your service to this country deserves recognition and respect,” he added.

Agreement Not a Coalition, But Future Possibilities Remain

After Ruto’s speech, Raila clarified that the agreement between ODM and UDA was not a formal coalition. However, he acknowledged that its success could pave the way for broader political collaboration in the future.

“The MoU we have signed today does not mean that ODM and UDA have formed a political coalition,” Raila emphasized. “However, if the agreement is well-implemented, it could lay the foundation for more structured political cooperation in the future, aimed at ensuring a stable and united country.”

Ruto echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that their partnership was a step toward national unity. “For Kenya to move forward, it will take more than just Raila Odinga and me.

It requires the collective effort of all leaders and citizens to bring this country together and implement changes that will improve the lives of our people,” he stated.

Key Points of the MoU

The two leaders signed a 10-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening national unity and improving governance. Some of the key commitments in the agreement include:

  • Implementing the NADCO Report: Fully enforcing recommendations from the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) to ensure political stability.
  • Inclusivity in Budget and Public Appointments: Ensuring that all regions receive fair representation in government allocations and job opportunities.
  • Strengthening Devolution: Enhancing county governments to allow better service delivery to citizens.
  • Economic Growth for Youth: Creating investment opportunities and job programs specifically targeting young people.
  • Leadership Integrity and Accountability: Promoting ethical leadership while discouraging wasteful government spending.
  • Respecting Citizens’ Rights: Safeguarding Kenyans’ freedom of peaceful assembly and protecting the rights of those affected by past injustices.
  • National Debt Audit: Conducting a thorough review of how the country’s debt has been used to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • Fighting Corruption: Taking firm action against corruption and preventing the misuse of public resources.
  • Protecting Press Freedom: Upholding the independence of the media and ensuring journalists operate without fear or intimidation.
  • Ending Forced Disappearances: Stopping cases of illegal abductions and reinforcing the rule of law to protect all citizens.

This agreement marks a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape, as the two long-time rivals set aside their differences for the sake of national progress.

While the deal does not immediately translate into a political alliance, it signals the possibility of a more united and cooperative leadership in the future.
