Nekesa Chebukati, the daughter of the late Wafula Chebukati, has shared a shocking revelation about an assassination attempt on her father during the 2022 general elections.
Speaking at her father’s funeral on Saturday, March 8, Nekesa disclosed that Chebukati had received intelligence about a plan to take his life in an effort to prevent him from announcing the election results.
Despite the dangerous threats, Nekesa emphasized that her father remained resolute and showed no signs of retreating from his duty to announce the election results.
She recalled how, just moments before he went to Bomas to announce the final results, Chebukati had been informed of the plot against him.
Nekesa and her father spent some time together before he left, where they prayed with a pastor, and she hugged him tightly.
She said she knew without a doubt that her father would not be swayed and would stand firm for the truth and for the people of Kenya.
“I looked at my father, and he looked at me. I told him he didn’t need to explain anything because I knew he would do the right thing for Kenyans,” Nekesa recalled.
It was a deeply emotional moment as Nekesa noted that she saw her father shed a tear, something she had never witnessed before. She realized that this could very well be the last time they were together.
Nekesa also shared how, after the dramatic announcement of the results at Bomas, Chebukati returned home injured and bleeding. She described how Chebukati, despite being unaware of the blood dripping from his feet, was focused solely on the task at hand.

“He took off his shoes, and he didn’t even realize he was bleeding, but he was so proud of what he had accomplished,” she said. His commitment to his work remained unwavering, even under such intense pressure.
Wafula Chebukati, appointed as the IEBC Chairman by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2017, played a pivotal role in overseeing the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
Sadly, Chebukati passed away on February 20, losing his battle with brain cancer.
During the eulogy, Chebukati’s children—Emmanuel, Jonathan, and Nekesa—honored him as the best father, acknowledging the guidance he provided throughout their lives.

They pledged to carry forward the lessons they learned from him, ensuring that his legacy would live on for generations to come.
