Murkomen Forms Special Task Force to Tackle Drug Abuse
In a strong effort to curb the growing problem of drug abuse, the government has appointed a team of top experts to lead the fight against illegal narcotics.
On Friday, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, officially announced the appointment of 18 highly skilled professionals.
These experts will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, and ensuring the proper disposal of dangerous drugs across the country.
The newly appointed analysts include Jane Nafula Kisutia, Dorcus Nzilani Muthusi, Jackson Siele, Paul Bwora Wahoye, Jerusha Waithera Mugo, Salvine Cheruto Katukoi, Godwin Khamala Waliama, David Kiara Muthomi, Mercy Nkarye Runya, and Catherine Mbete Nzuve.
Other members of the task force are Hemed Abeid Munis, Khadija Abdullahi Boya, Alexander Mbae Mburia, Luge Victoria Kiugha, Beth Purity Makena Gitonga, Christine Naserian Kudate, Felista Kairithi Henry, and Crispin Njeru Nguru.

This move is a major step forward in strengthening the efforts of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in protecting public health and ensuring national safety.
Role of the Special Task Force
Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, analysts have a key role in helping the country combat drug abuse. Their responsibilities include:
- Conducting laboratory tests on seized drugs to confirm whether they are narcotic or psychotropic substances. This involves detailed chemical analysis to determine the nature of the substances.
- Assisting in legal proceedings by providing expert testimony in court cases involving illegal drugs. Their findings and reports will be used as evidence in prosecutions.
- Documenting and preparing detailed reports on all tested substances for legal and record-keeping purposes.
- Ensuring proper handling, storage, and disposal of illegal drugs in compliance with legal regulations.
- Collaborating with NACADA, the interior ministry, and law enforcement agencies by providing technical expertise in cases related to drug trafficking and abuse.
The Growing Drug Abuse Crisis
The formation of this task force comes at a critical time when NACADA has raised concerns about the alarming increase in drug and substance abuse, particularly among young people in universities. According to a recent report, the number of youth affected by drugs has been rising steadily, posing a serious threat to the future of the country.

CS Murkomen has been vocal about the urgent need to address this crisis. He emphasized that alcohol and drug abuse are destroying the health and potential of young people, threatening national security, and slowing down the country’s development.
“Alcohol and drug abuse among our youth ruin their health, hurt their potential, threaten our national security, and undermine our development. This crisis needs an urgent national conversation about finding an all-of-society approach to combat it,” stated Murkomen during the launch of NACADA’s latest report.
With the appointment of this expert team, the government aims to strengthen efforts in fighting drug abuse, ensuring stricter enforcement of laws, and protecting the younger generation from the dangers of substance addiction.
