A heated confrontation unfolded between Mumias East MP Peter Salasya and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa.
The altercation began when Salasya interrupted Echesa’s roadside address, accusing him of theft and hurling insults such as “Mwizi wewe, takataka” (“You thief, trash”). Echesa retorted by asserting his seniority, reminding Salasya of his past ministerial role and demanding respect.
The situation escalated as supporters from both sides engaged in shouting matches, heightening tensions in the area.
This clash is part of an ongoing feud between the two politicians. Previously, Salasya had publicly accused Echesa of inciting violence in the region.
He alleged that Echesa orchestrated the burning of 50 acres of sugarcane belonging to the struggling Mumias Sugar Company by inciting local youths. Salasya labeled Echesa a “nuisance” and threatened to personally apprehend him if authorities failed to act.
The rivalry between Salasya and Echesa reflects deeper political tensions in Kakamega County. Such public disputes not only disrupt local events but also risk undermining development initiatives in the region.
The ongoing discord emphasizes the need for dialogue and unity among leaders to effectively address the challenges facing their constituents.
