President William Ruto’s tour of Nairobi took a chaotic turn on Thursday afternoon when a group of young people in Kibera attempted to reach his motorcade, momentarily disrupting his visit.
The commotion broke out as the President arrived at Ayany Primary School in Kibra to launch a project. A large number of young men rushed toward his convoy, hoping to get his attention.
However, police officers who were on high alert quickly stepped in to control the situation. Some of the youth managed to breach the restricted school compound, prompting the officers to use force, including beating up some of the individuals involved.
In videos seen by Newshub.co.ke, armed police officers could be seen trying to block the youths from entering the institution. Some of the residents sustained injuries in the scuffle, while others ran away to avoid being caught up in the confrontation.
Shortly after, officers locked the school gate while President Ruto addressed the students inside. However, determined residents could be seen banging on the gate, demanding access to the premises.
Despite the police presence, the persistent crowd eventually overpowered the officers, forcing their way into the school before heading toward the President’s meeting.
Growing Concerns Over Ruto’s Nairobi Tours
This latest incident comes amid rising concerns over President Ruto’s development tours in Nairobi, which have been overshadowed by reports of crime and chaos.
Just two days ago, videos and photos emerged showing young individuals engaging in theft and harassment during the President’s visit to Mathare and Ruaraka. Reports indicated that some of the youths stormed shops, looted goods, and even targeted commuters along busy roads.
At one point, sections of Thika Road became impassable as rogue youths attacked vehicles, stealing from passengers and motorists in broad daylight.
Police Crack Down on Suspects
In response to the criminal activities, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched an operation and have since arrested five suspects linked to the attacks.
Authorities confirmed that all suspects were processed and taken to court, with investigations still ongoing to track down other individuals involved in the incidents.
Security agencies have assured the public that efforts are being made to prevent further chaos in future presidential events and to bring to justice anyone involved in criminal activities during these visits.
